The Challenge

Climate change is the biggest challenge of our time. It is already affecting our weather, health and wellbeing, natural environment, biodiversity, food production, biosecurity, infrastructure, and our economy.

As a district we need to do what we can to mitigate the effects of climate change. We also need to prepare for the changes that are ahead of us and respond to the social, environmental, cultural and economic effects of our changing climate.

What Can Your Household Do - Interactive PDF

To mark World Environment Day 2024, Waimate District Council and our neighbours at Timaru District Council are co-publishing a householders guide to adapting to climate change. The downloadable 16-page document includes live links to useful websites from NZ government agencies, universities and consumer organisations to provide additional information. It covers both adapting to weather changes accelerated by global warming and help in reducing your household’s emissions of the greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide from burning fuels, that drive warming.

Strategy Timeline

We are engaging with our community to create the Waimate District Climate Resilience Strategy as a blueprint for collective action and part of a wider conversation about how we work together to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to minimise future harm, and plan for the ongoing effects of climate change.

  • An online survey was conducted to gauge the public sentiment around climate change.
  • March 2024: Public presentations including a summary of the science behind climate change and why it matters. Additionally, we’re planning on inviting some key stakeholders within the district to present their climate change vision.
  • April – December 2024: Public workshops based on the data collated from the survey.
  • September 2025: WDC CC strategy published / completed.
