The purpose of having a liquor ban area is to help promote a safe environment by reducing harm and property damage that can be caused through the consumption of alcohol.
Banning liquor in public places is enforced through Council's Consolidated Bylaw (Chapter 4 - Liquor Ban in Public Places). The bylaw prohibits:
- The consumption of alcohol in a public place
- The bringing of alcohol into a public place
- The possession of alcohol in a public place
Liquor ban area
Waimate has a liquor ban in the main CBD area of the town (see the map below). This is a permanent ban in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Drinking alcohol in a liquor ban area
If you drink in a public area in the liquor ban area, you can, on summary conviction, be fined up to $20,000.
