Community more secure with CCTV cameras
Seven CCTV cameras will be installed around the CBD area of Waimate in an effort to help lower crime and keep the community safe.
Local businesses have supported the project by agreeing to have the cameras fixed to their premises and, once operational, will be monitored by Police.
Mayor Craig Rowley says the initiative has been a joint venture between local businesses and organisations, Police and Council.
“We’re pleased to have the support of these businesses and organisations as, without them, this project would have been more difficult to implement,” says Mayor Rowley.
“Together we’re helping create a safer community and gives Police another tool to help them fight crime and keep us safe.”
Council has paid for the purchase and installation of the cameras and they are expected to be fully operational by the end of June 2018. The cameras will be installed at these locations:
- Salvation Army Building
- Corner Queen and High Streets (2)
- Regent Theatre
- Connect Church
- Waimate Town and Country Club
- Interfreight
Waimate Police Sergeant Kevin Reynolds says, “Cameras are an excellent crime prevention resource and they also provide community reassurance. “They are one of the tools Police use to investigate and prevent offences, enabling people to be safe and feel safe. Waimate Police is pleased to be involved in this important partnership with the council and local businesses.”
