Waimate District Civic Awards Enters its Tenth Year

Nominations are now being accepted for Waimate’s 2020 Civic Awards, the prestigious Mayoral-led programme that recognises the district’s unsung heroes.

The March event will be the tenth successive year the district’s volunteers have been celebrated and over the last decade 43 individuals, five young people and four groups/organisations have been recognised through this forum.

Waimate District Mayor Craig Rowley says the awards have been held annually to recognise the district’s special people who work tirelessly in the volunteer sector for often little thanks or recognition.

Over the last few years, the youth and groups/organisations categories have been added.

“Volunteering is alive and well in the Waimate District and there’s still plenty of very worthy recipients left,” he says.

John Begg, Sandra Coles, Warren Herron, and Janice Mehrtens were chosen as this year’s Adult Civic Award recipients, the Youth Award was given to Catherine Nicol, and the Friends of Knottingley Park took away the group/organisation award.

“I’d like to urge nominators especially from the rural areas of the district to get active, as there are plenty of worthy individuals, groups and young people out there doing good things across the entire district.”

Mayor Rowley would also like to encourage unsuccessful nominators from previous years to re-submit their nomination again this year. Nomination forms are available from Council’s main office, library, Information Centre, website or by emailing karalyn@waimatedc.govt.nz

The 2020 recipients of the individual, youth and group or organisation awards will be recognised in a formal ceremony in March.
