Waimate District Council is delighted to announce the completion of the new garage located alongside the Waimate Event Centre.
The new five-bay garage will house the Waimate Community Vehicle Trust’s fleet of community vehicles in one central location and create a secure hub for the vehicles.
The Trust was keen to centralise all their vehicles in one place and approached the Waimate District Council to consider a proposal to garage the Trust’s vehicles in 2018.
The preferred site option, adjacent to the Waimate Event Centre, building design and finish was approved by Council in late 2018 with a colour scheme that would remain in keeping with the Waimate Event Centre.
Construction on the project began in November last year with the tilt-slab design selected to match the construction techniques used for the Waimate Event Centre.
The total build costs were calculated in the order of $140,000 for the co-funded project, with Council contributing up to $50,000 from the Subdivision Recreation Reserve Contribution Fund and the Waimate Community Vehicle Trust providing a capital investment of $90,000. Whilst the facility belongs to the Council, the Waimate Community Vehicle Trust will occupy it for a peppercorn rent and cover electricity costs.
Mayor Craig Rowley says the new garage is a fantastic new asset for the community by providing a permanent base that will ensure the maintenance and longevity of the vehicles.
“The Waimate Community Vehicle Trust provides a vital service for the Waimate District, enabling people without transport to make connections around town and to neighbouring districts,”
“This is an important service that benefits our community and Council are pleased to have assisted the Trust with this project.”
