Calling Waimate District's Unsung Heroes . . .

Nominations are now being accepted for the annual Waimate 2021 Civic Awards, the prestigious Mayoral-led programme that recognises the district’s unsung heroes.

The event, now in its 11th successive year, will take place in March and will celebrate the tireless work and efforts put forward by many throughout the district. Since its inception, the awards have recognised 47 individuals, six young people and five groups and organisations.

Waimate District Mayor Craig Rowley is expecting this year’s nominations to reflect people who were out and about helping during the COVID-19 lockdown period, with a special emphasis and reflection on some of the work carried out during this tough time across all sectors of the community.

“Volunteering is alive and well in the Waimate District and there’s still plenty of very worthy recipients left who work tirelessly in the volunteer sector for often little thanks or recognition.

“We’re looking forward to sharing some of these stories next year and celebrating our district’s unsung heroes.”

Adding to the COVID theme, the awards selection committee are inviting people to contribute their best COVID-19 lockdown photo to be used in a special display to honour the individual and collective efforts. All contributors can drop their photo in to Council or email Karalyn Reid, karalyn@waimatedc.govt.nz

Civic Award Recipients recognised this year were Alison Kitchin, the late Betty Dawson, David (Digger) McCulloch and Dougall McLauchlan, while the Youth Award went to Campbell Sheddan and the Group Award to St John Waimate.

All nominations must be received by 12pm on Friday 29 January 2021.
