Chorus Bringing Fibre Broadband to Waimate

Waimate’s wait for faster broadband is just about over, with work on building the new Chorus fibre network starting this week.

Mayor Craig Rowley says it is truly great news that world-class connectivity is coming to town.

“We know what a difference great internet makes to not only the social side of people’s lives, but also to economies, learning and health,” he said.

“It seems such a long time ago that we were told of fibre coming our town and I’m really excited that it is finally almost here.”

Waimate town has been divided into sections and work starts by services being marked out on footpaths and berms.

Residents will then see build crews moving into these sections to do the physical laying of the cables that will hold the fibre lines, and letters will be delivered to let people know what will be happening.

When Chorus’ fibre build is complete, more than 2000 homes and businesses in Waimate will be able to connect to the network, and generally it is free to do this. To help explain this a team of Chorus experts will be in town at Waimate Town & Country Club on July 14 from 3pm to 6pm and they will be able to answer any questions.

“There will be an invitation in people’s mail around two weeks before this so keep an eye out for it,” says Andrew Carroll, Chorus General Manager of Customer and Network Operations.

“Fibre is how we internet now. Whether this is doing our banking, connecting with family and friends through Skype, streaming our favourite shows or movies, online gaming or even simply browsing the web or emailing.

“What is common in most homes now is that multiple devices are connected at the same time and this is where the performance of fibre shines.”
