Consultation now open on Three Waters Better Off Funding
Waimate District residents can now have their say on the Government’s Three Waters Better Off Funding Proposal, with Council calling for submissions over the next fortnight.
As part of the Three Waters Reform, the Government has made $2 billion available to all councils in recognition of the significance of the proposed transfer of assets and responsibility for water services delivery. The purpose of the funding is to support councils to transition to their new role post Three Waters Reform, with the funding focused on community wellbeing and allocated based on population size, deprivation index ratings and land area.
Council’s total share of the Better Off Funding Package is $9.68 million, distributed in two tranches. Tranche 1 has a value of up to $2.42 million, with the remaining $7.26 million available via Tranche 2. Due to an extension granted by the Department of Internal Affairs, Council has until 30 November 2022 to apply for Tranche 1 and are now calling on the community to have their say.
Referring to the consultation process, Waimate District Council Chief Executive Stuart Duncan strongly encourages residents to make a submission, helping to give Council a steer on their decision making later this year.
“Our position against the Three Waters Reform (as a Council) has been well documented, and it’s important to note that applying for this funding does not mean we are suddenly supporting the reform,” Duncan said.
“However, this is a significant issue for our district and we really want to see people taking the opportunity to engage in the discussion. Grab a copy of the consultation document, let us know if you are for or against Council applying for Tranche 1 of the funds and take a look at some of the projects that may fit the funding criteria.”
Consultation documents are available at Glenavy Store, St Andrews Store, Makikihi Motors, Council Reception, Waimate District Library, New World Waimate and online at waimatedc.govt.nz.
Submissions can be made online, in person, via post or email – and must be received by Wednesday 12 October at 4pm.
