This year is turning out to be an important one for the Waimate District. However, even with all the challenges we face, I feel optimistic. As we map the future of our district with the Long Term Plan 2025-2034, I’m confident that Council, staff and our community will work together to build a better tomorrow. Consultation is now open and I welcome everyone, whether you agree with Council’s proposals or not, to make a submission and have your say. Your feedback and ideas have value. You can find all the information you need at waimatedc.govt.nz/ltp
Last month I had a meeting with James Meager, Minister for the South Island to talk about issues plaguing Canterbury. I told him that the South Island is getting the shorter end of the stick when it comes to funding from the Government, especially when it comes to roading budgets. I advocated for increased funding for the Waimate District, and the wider Canterbury region. Maintaining our large roading networks should not and cannot fall on councils alone. The Government needs to step up and do more.
I am delighted with the progress we’ve made with the Event Centre fire restoration. With the tender process now concluded, Council has awarded the contract, and we are about to hand over the site for the commencement of repairs.
Until next time, take care.
